Yosemite West is tucked away on a forested ridge at 6,000 feet elevation, inside Yosemite National Park's southwestern boundary β€” which means getting here requires driving mountain roads through some of California's most spectacular scenery. The good news: it's straightforward once you know which route to take and what to prepare for.

Our address is 7240 Yosemite Pkwy, Yosemite West, CA 95389. You'll arrive through a canopy of Sierra Nevada pines to a private driveway β€” and we'll have sent you detailed turn-by-turn instructions the day before your arrival.

Important: GPS works reasonably well on major routes but can become unreliable on the final stretch into Yosemite West. Always follow the written directions included in your arrival email rather than GPS alone once you're on Wawona Road.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Routes by Origin City

πŸŒ‰ From San Francisco Bay Area

~3.5–4 hours ~200 miles Year-round via CA-140

Recommended year-round route (CA-140 via El Portal):

  • I-580 East β†’ I-205 East β†’ CA-99 North to Merced
  • CA-140 East through Mariposa and El Portal
  • Enter Yosemite through the Arch Rock Entrance
  • Continue ~8 miles to Wawona Road (CA-41) β€” turn left
  • Yosemite West entrance is ~3.5 miles up on the right

Summer alternative (CA-120 via Big Oak Flat): Faster in summer but the Big Oak Flat Road closes in winter/heavy snow. Add 30 minutes from Oakland via I-580 and CA-120 through Groveland.

🌴 From Los Angeles

~5.5–6.5 hours ~310 miles Year-round via CA-41 or CA-140

Best route (via Fresno):

  • I-5 North or I-405 North β†’ CA-99 North to Fresno
  • CA-41 North through Oakhurst toward Yosemite South Entrance
  • Enter Yosemite at the South Gate on CA-41
  • Drive ~6 miles north β€” Yosemite West entrance is on the left

This is the most direct LA route and avoids the Bay Area entirely. Stock up on groceries in Oakhurst (Vons, Grocery Outlet) β€” it's your last major shopping stop before the park.

πŸ™οΈ From Sacramento

~2.5–3 hours ~175 miles Year-round via CA-99 + CA-140
  • CA-99 South to Merced
  • CA-140 East through Mariposa and El Portal
  • Arch Rock Entrance β†’ Wawona Road β†’ Yosemite West

✈️ From Fresno (Nearest Airport)

~1.75–2 hours ~90 miles Via CA-41 North

Fresno Yosemite International (FAT) is the closest major airport. Pick up your rental car and head north on CA-41 through Oakhurst. You'll pass through the South Gate and reach Yosemite West in about 2 hours.

Arriving at El Capitan Hideaway β€” the driveway is shared with Half Dome Haven at 7240 Yosemite Pkwy.

β›½ Gas, Groceries & Supplies β€” Stock Up Before Entering

There is no gas station in Yosemite West or Yosemite Valley. The nearest fuel is at El Portal (25 min from the cabin) or Mariposa (35 min). Plan to arrive with a full tank.

Similarly, food options inside the park are limited and expensive. We strongly recommend stocking up on groceries before entering the park.

LocationDistance from CabinWhat's Available
Mariposa (CA-140 route)~35 minRaley's, CVS, gas, restaurants, hardware
Oakhurst (CA-41 route, from LA)~40 minVons, Grocery Outlet, gas, Target-style stores
El Portal Pioneer Market~25 minSmall market, gas β€” good for top-ups
Yosemite Village Store~22 minBasic groceries, limited selection, higher prices

⛓️ Tire Chains β€” Know the Rules

If you're visiting between November and April, tire chains are mandatory to carry in your vehicle by California law β€” and chain controls can be activated on Wawona Road with very little warning. You can be turned around at the gate if you don't have them.

Chain Control Levels on CA-41 / Wawona Road:

  • R1: Chains or snow tires with at least 6mm tread required on non-4WD vehicles
  • R2: Chains required on ALL vehicles (including 4WD and AWD)
  • R3: Road closed β€” no travel permitted

Check current road conditions at nps.gov/yose and Caltrans (511.org) the morning of your travel. We also send road condition updates in your arrival email when conditions are changing.

Pro tip: Buy or rent chains in Mariposa or Oakhurst (they rent them at some gas stations). The chain installation areas on Wawona Road can be crowded β€” know how to put them on before you need to.

πŸ”‘ Check-In: What to Expect on Arrival

Both cabins are self check-in via keypad lock. No meeting required, no key pickup. Here's what arrival looks like:

  1. 24 hours before check-in: You'll receive a detailed email with your access codes, parking instructions, keypad entry steps, and our direct contact info.
  2. At the entrance gate: Pay your park entrance fee (or show your America the Beautiful pass). As a Yosemite West resident you are exempt from timed-entry reservations β€” drive straight through.
  3. On Wawona Road: Follow the turn-off for Yosemite West. The cabin is at 7240 Yosemite Pkwy. Parking is off-street in the driveway β€” pull in and follow the signs to your unit.
  4. At the cabin: Enter your keypad code to unlock the front door. The cabin is ready for you from 3:00 PM.

Arriving late? No problem β€” the keypad works 24 hours. Just make sure you have your code email saved or accessible offline before you lose cell service in the mountains.

🚌 Is There Public Transportation?

A personal vehicle is essential for staying at Yosemite West. The YARTS bus service (yarts.com) connects Yosemite Valley with Merced and Mammoth Lakes β€” but it does not stop at Yosemite West. Once inside Yosemite Valley, the free Yosemite Valley Shuttle covers major Valley attractions, but the cabin requires a car.

If you don't have access to a vehicle, we recommend renting one from Fresno airport β€” it's the most cost-effective option and makes for a beautiful drive.
